DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE

This discipline encompasses screening, referring and treating patients with sleep and sleep breathing disorders, ranging from benign snoring to obstructive sleep apnoea and UARS and insomnia.  The heart of dental sleep medicine is treatment with customised oral appliances designed to gently posture the lower jaw forward during sleep, to open up the pharyngeal airway. Sleep breathing disorders affect multiple organ systems – hence Sleep Medicine is an interdisciplinary subspecialty that involves trained practitioners in different fields (such as orthodontics, otolaryngology, respiratory medicine, psychology, neurology and speech pathology) collaborating to provide patients with complete care.
